“Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” I found this on a small plaque carefully placed where very few would ever see it. I was a rookie youth pastor. It was my first time to stand behind the pulpit of the church I served. Securely fastened where I would place my Bible and notes were the penetrating words from John 12:21. Words that have faithfully stayed with me from that very first glance. Every time I open the Bible, or open my heart to share Words of love and hope, I am reminded that the One people long to see and hear is Jesus.
Over the years, I still find myself processing the challenge of this verse. How can I show them Jesus when I am not behind the pulpit? How can I show them Jesus when I am not behind the four walls of the church building?
This inspires us to “Pray for one!” As we awaken each morning and before our feet touch the floor, we are already asking our God to show us the one who is asking if God is real, to show us the one asking if God is there, to show us the one asking if God truly loves them. This inspires our desire to better look, live, and love like Jesus wherever we go and whatever we do.
It remains important to invite others to join us in worship, community, and service. Each of us have friends who would join us at church this weekend if only we would invite them. But that is for a later conversation. This week, my heart is drawn to invite you to join me in living life as His disciples in such a way that we show them Jesus in all of His unfailing love.
“Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”
