Irrefutable! Indisputable! Incontrovertible! You get the idea. It’s been tested and retested and then tested more. Here it is: what is the number one reason why people come to church? Over and over and over again, it’s because they were invited by a friend!
But wait a minute, what about half of the American church that had not one person find saving faith in Jesus in the last twelve months? What about two-thirds of the American church that is either plateaued or in decline? Does that mean that the people of those churches are without friends, or just don’t care?
Not here! Not now! Not our church! We have friends, and we care! And so, we Pray for One! As our eyes awaken, and before our feet hit the floor, we pray for that one person we might meet in the coming day. That one who is desperately crying out, “God, are you real? Do you care? Please show me that You are real; that You care!” And so, every morning we Pray for One, asking our God of unfailing love to use us to show His love to those desperately seeking Him.
And now, as your pastor, I humbly suggest that the Spirit of God is inviting us to consider Pray for One 201. This is all about engaging with family, friends, and neighbors for the purpose of becoming a friend. A friend with anyone in need of the forgiveness, healing, and freedom that can only be found in our God of unfailing love. This is all about becoming a friend so that we can extend an invitation to join us in worship, in serving others, and in the community of faith, as we grow life-changing relationships with God and one another.
We are going to begin working together as a church family on how to be friends with those in need of God’s forgiveness, healing, and freedom. We are going to ask God to give us at least one family member, friend, or neighbor to pray for daily. We are going to learn how to invite them to join us for coffee, a meal, or in sharing a fun life experience. We are going to learn how to invite them to join us in serving others. We are going to learn to leave an empty chair in our Journey Group (whether a Sunday class or a Small Group) so that there is always room for one more. We are going to learn to invite them to join us in worship.
We are going to celebrate the stories of new friends we have made, of friends we have invited, and, best of all, friends who have found forgiveness, healing, and freedom in Jesus.
Why Pray for One 201? It is how we look, live, and love like Jesus! It is how we make disciples of Jesus that love God and neighbor!
Be a friend. Share life. Share an invitation. Watch God at work—in us, and in others!
P.s. We think it is important for our friends to get an idea of what to expect before they even step into the building. Most will check out our website to learn more about us before coming. With that in mind, on the weekend of September 15 and 16, we will have a team of photographers here capturing the joyful experience we share every weekend. These are Christian men and women, people of faith, who will be discreet and professional. Just be yourselves, loving God, and one another. Let’s show the westside of Rochester and beyond what it means to authentically look, live, and love like Jesus!
