Pearce volunteers continue to support St. Luke and St. Cyrene Episcopal Church (2 Saints) on Fitzhugh in the city, as they host homeless families in the RAIHN program for one week at a time. We would love to have others join the RAIHN volunteer team before our next opportunity to serve December 2-9. The next volunteer orientation is Thursday, October 11, at 6:30pm at Third Presbyterian, 4 Meigs Street (corner of East Avenue). Other opportunities to serve include joining the RAIHN “Clean Team” (cleans the transitional housing apartment above the Day Center), volunteering in the Day Center on Webster Avenue, or driving the 14-passenger van to and from the Day Center in the morning or late afternoon to get families to the congregations for the evening.
Here’s a testimony from one of our volunteers, Jess Newcomb: “I have had the privilege of volunteering with RAIHN twice now on hospitality (7-9:30 on a Friday each time). Having majored in Urban Ministry in college, I jumped at the chance to take part in an organization like this in a timeframe that works for my busy family, with four kids ages 2-11. The last time I volunteered, I was able to spend quality time with an active little four-year-old girl, reading books, playing with toys, letting her play with my hair, watching silly YouTube videos, listening to her chatter away, and walking her to the potty four times. Driving home that night, I decided I need to think twice the next time I’m ‘at my wit’s end,’ frustrated and exhausted when my husband is out of town for work and I’m on my own with four kids. You see, that cute little four-year-old’s mom also had a very rough and tumble little one-year-old boys and twin two-month-olds. And she was homeless. But RAIHN is giving her the chance to keep her young family together and safe while working toward employment and acquiring housing. I encourage anyone at Pearce who wants to volunteer with RAIHN to do so! There are lots of options besides hospitality, such as making dinner and sleeping overnight. And Peare’s rotation to serve is every few months, so the time commitment is minimal.”
If you would like to learn a bit more about this ministry, join Pearce RAIHN volunteers at a potluck dinner with the other volunteers who assist at 2 Saints on Wednesday, October 3, at 6:15pm. Please contact Bev Faro (firstname.lastname@example.org) to let her know you will be coming!
