Over the last twenty years, the number of families receiving a basket from the Pearce Thanksgiving Basket ministry has increased from a couple of dozen to over 1,000. The expansion of this community outreach has been possible through the generosity of the Pearce congregation and our partnership with Rochester Family Mission to provide food and volunteers, and to identify needy families. Additional families have been blessed by baskets the Pearce Thanksgiving Ministry provides to Heart & Soul and several other Rochester city churches, as well as Nurse Family Partnership, and Lifetime Assistance. Each of these groups identify needy families and distribute to them. And, for many years, FoodLink has been an active partner to our ministry with food donations.
The 2018 Thanksgiving Basket Ministry is up and running. Look for the Thanksgiving Basket table in the main lobby. Drop off Food Donations any time now through November 17 or sign up to “Adopt-a-Box,” where you sign up to fill one box, or more, with the entire list of suggested food items. The list of items needed for Adopt-a-Box is available at the collection table, or you can download it here. Our goal is 200 Adopt-a-Boxes.
There are many other ways to get involved and help with this ministry:
Boxes Needed: With all the food we collect, we need about 1,000 boxes to assemble the food for distribution. We’re collecting empty boxes (copy paper or equivalent size). Bring them to the church and drop them off near the food collection table in the lobby or store them in the balcony of Parmerter Chapel.
Make Maps: If you can help print maps to aid drivers with deliveries, contact Terry & Sherri Taber at email@example.com.
Frozen Turkeys: We hope to raise $15,000 to purchase 1,000 frozen turkeys to go in the boxes. (We are not asking for turkey donations this year.) You may place your financial donation in the offering plate or drop it off at the lobby reception desk during the week; checks made payable to Pearce Church, with “turkeys” on the memo line.
Packing Boxes: We’ll pack the Thanksgiving Baskets on Saturday, November 17, beginning at 9am in the Family Life Center. There’s no need to sign up ahead of time, just come ready to help pack boxes that morning!
Deliver Boxes: Signup sheets are available in the main lobby. It generally takes about 60-90 minutes to deliver 8-10 boxes, including the time to drive into the city from Pearce Church. A driver’s instruction sheet will be available in the Pearce Family Life Center beginning Saturday, November 17. The schedule for deliveries:
- Saturday, November 17: 10am-4pm
- Sunday, November 18: Noon-4pm
- Monday, November 19: 8:30am-4pm
- Tuesday, November 20: only if needed: 9am-4pm
In order to deliver as many boxes on Saturday as possible, please consider signing up for deliveries on that day. Our goal is to deliver 800 boxes on Saturday. This requires about 75 drivers. Are you available to help then?
